Quid of HISD’s Magnet Transportation?

I am sure you have heard the controversy surrounding the amount HISD spends bussing children from one part of the district to another to attend their magnet programs.  The numbers are staggering (over $16 Mil a year) and exceed the amount spent on the magnet programs themselves!!!  WIth my child on the verge of transitionning from elementary to middle school, I am considering the magnet programs, especially the Vanguard Middle Schools such as TH Rogers and Lanier Middle School.  Now, will transportation stand in the way of my decision?  Probably not, but it would be nice if I did not have to worry about getting my child to school.  The economics however don’t make any sense to me, and I wish no one had to go outside their neighborhood to find a decent school!  Do you agree?

West U. Pool: no bubble, but heat!

For those of you who miss the cozy winter swimming under the old West U. bubble, there is good news. Although they will not purchase a new bubble which costs over $100,000, the City will invest in a pool heater so the pool can stay open during the colder months!  $20,000 later, and you can swim close to home.  In the meantime,  feel free to use the Bellaire Aquatic Center where the competition pool is heated.  Any avid swimmers out there?  Let us hear from you!

Feeling despondent?

Despondency is a great fancy word for a reality that is not so glorious… Basically, you’re feeling down in the dumps.  You’ve got the blues.  Despondency is a little more elegant than depression but it is basically the same thing.  It is easy to let oneself step on this downward slope.  All you have to do is listen to the news of doom and gloom, feel the pinch at the check-out line, hear the predictions of looming bankruptcies and bailouts, learn of a friend who has been laid off…  Unquestionably, times are tough right now.  And this is a good time not to look at the big picture anymore.  Look at your own situation, focus on what YOU can do.  It does not matter what’s out there.

One principle I have learned recently is “WHAT YOU FOCUS ON EXPANDS”.  And I have very much experienced this in my business.  While everyone is sounding the bells for the choking real estate market, I have put my focus on one thing: Lead Generation.  And what I focused on has expanded my business.

You can do anything you put your mind to, so where are you putting your mind?  If you need inspiration, watch these 2 videos and let’s talk after that…

It’s time to ring in the holidays….

The City of Bellaire is celebrating “Centennial Holiday in the Park” on December 4th.  Bring your family and friends to watch Santa arrive atop a blaring fire truck.  Then move your family to the gazebo, as Santa listens to the children’s wants and dreams.  And, of course, you don’t want to miss that precious moment by taking pictures.  Bring your own camera or purchase a professional photo, but make sure you don’t miss this memory.

To welcome Santa, the City has arranged for 40,000 pounds of REAL snow.  With moon jumps, a petting zoo, pony rides, a lighted children’s train, food, crafts and entertainment from local schools, who could ask for a more entertaining event!  From toddlers to grown ups this event is something to put on your calendar and best of all…admission is free!

It all takes place:           Bellaire Town Square

                                    7008 South Rice Avenue

                                    5:30 – 8:30 PM

P.S. Santa arrives at 5:45…don’t be late for this very important date!

What if…..

I recently had a minor setback with family health issues.  And, while minor in the overall scheme of things, it seemed almost insurmountable at times.  There is the logical side of me thinking that everything will be okay, that people get sick every day and within a short period of time, they are well and back to their old selves…and in some cases even better.  Then there is the emotional side of me that has a tendency to concentrate of the “what ifs”.  What if it’s more serious that I think…what if the illness lingers on and begins to affect the quality of life…what if we can’t afford treatment?  What if, what if, what if…. then suddenly in the middle of one long sleepless night, there was the realization that all the “what ifs” in the world didn’t matter if the world ended before morning.  As silly as it seems, it gave me a peace of mind I had been searching for…the ability to let go and leave it to a higher power.  There was absolutely nothing I could do about those “what ifs” and to continue to focus on them was jeopardizing my ability to live a functional life.  I can try to analyze, speculate, fear and control any number of things in my family’s life, but the realization that the “what ifs” were worthless was a big step.  Life is way to short to focus on those “what ifs” and I’m so glad I realized it before I let it overtake my reality!  Everything is fine now, we are all healthy and things are back to normal…or as normal as it was before but I have a whole new outlook on things.  I’ve worked on letting go my fears and worries (ok, at least some of them) and the world is a much for calm and pleasant place these days.

An evening at the House of Blues

Last Thursday, my husband and I did something we have not done in years… We went to a concert in the middle of the week!  An opera fan, I was a little apprehensive of the whole experience, however I was pleasantly surprised.  The House of Blues just opened downtown.  It was especially designed for these type of concerts: lots of space for standing room tickets on one level, and seating on the second level.  During the concert you can order drinks and purchase limited snack food such as chicken nuggets, pizza and pretzels.  Their is also a restaurant for a pre- or post-concert meal.  I had a really good time listening to Los Lonely Boys whom I discovered on a PBS special broadcast a day or two after the Hurricane (I watched them in black & white on a battery operated mini TV).  I wanted to hear them live.  They are just amazing players.  Henry Garza plays the lead guitar as if he was talking to you and me.  Jojo Garza shined in his solo moments on the bass guitar and the third brother’s arms were flying all over his beloved drums.  I was speechless!  So if you get a chance, look them up on YouTube or better yet go see them in Austin this weekend.

I also signed up for the online House of Blues calendar of events.  I just found out B B King will be there in a couple of weeks.  Worth another trip downtown?  you bet.
